Dr. Nalini M. Nadkarni joins the Graduate Student Showcase on Nov. 16 as the keynote speaker.

Tapestry Thinking: Weaving Approaches of Academia to Address Society’s Challenges

Academia is an arena that fosters discovery, but its members and activities can be removed from other sectors of society that might benefit from and contribute to our understanding of the world. Nadkarni’s academic career has been rooted in her curiosity about forests and trees, which has motivated her lifelong academic studies of rainforest canopy biota. Her concerns about the negative impacts of human activities such as climate change and deforestation have also prompted her to develop the approach of “tapestry thinking” -- the intentional connection of multiple ways of knowing. She has created long-term collaborations with faith-based groups, artists, rap singers, corporations, and people who are incarcerated, and weaves their values and knowledge into the enhancement of nature on our planet. This approach can be applied to diverse academic disciplines and societal issues at local, regional, and global scales.

The campus community is invited to attend the presentation in the LSC Theatre at 4:00 p.m. Ticket not required. The keynote address will be followed by the GradShow Awards Ceremony in the Grand Ballroom.

The session will not be recorded or livestreamed.
